The next morning, I awoke still in Nathan’s arms and caught him staring at the ceiling. He looked at me and smiled. Okay, I was definitely in heaven now.

“Good morning, beautiful,” he said, kissing my cheek.

I returned his smile and tried not to breathe on him.

“Good morning.” I yawned in the crook of my arm. “What time is it?”

  “Almost noon.”

I covered my face and groaned. “I need to brush my teeth and take a shower.”

My stomach growled. It always did that when I was hungry, which was so embarrassing.

He placed his hand on it. “And eat too.”

I thought about what we could eat. Bread and peanut butter were our only options. I had planned on going to the grocery store, but totally spaced it after Mom bailed on me. And with everything that was going on, food wasn’t a priority. I think I even lost like five pounds.

“Um, I can make us peanut butter toast.”

He pretended to ponder it. “Hmmm, peanut butter toast.”

“I’m sorry, but that’s all I have,” I said, my cheeks burning.

He traced his finger down the length of my cheek. “I’ll tell you what. You go take your shower, and I’ll stop at the deli and get us something to eat. By the time you’re done, I’ll be back.”

I squinted at him. “But don’t you need to take a shower too?”

“Do I smell bad?” he joked, sniffing himself.

  “No.” I laughed.

“We’ll go to my house after we eat. I’ll shower then.”

“You’re going to take me to your house?” My voice was raised in surprise.

He placed his hand on my cheek. “You’re my life now, and I want you in every part of it.”

My breath caught in my throat. He really meant it. He really, honest to God, meant it.

I covered his hand with mine. “I would like that.”

  “I love you,” he whispered.

He went to kiss me, but I stopped him. He moved his head back and looked at me in question.

“I love you, too, but I really need to brush my teeth.” My mouth tasted like a fairy squatted over it and took a dump.

He smiled. “Okay. So what do you want me to get?”

I stepped out of bed, still wearing my lace camisole and matching boy shorts. His gaze moved seductively across my body, and then he reached to grab my arm. I jumped back and wagged a finger at him. His eyes were brightening, which created a warm stirring sensation in my belly.

“Not now. I feel really gross.” A slow smile crept on my lips. He was so cute with his blond tip hair sticking up, and that ornery look on his face.

“You are far from being gross. In fact”–his eyes moved up and down my body–“I think you’re the most gorgeous, sexy girl who ever walked the earth.”

I wrapped my arms around myself, blushing. “I’m going to take a shower,” I said, changing the subject. “Get me a croissant veggie sandwich, light on the mayo, and no avocados.”

He sat on the edge of the bed while putting his black jeans on. He glanced over his shoulder, his eyes back to normal. “Is that it?”

“Oh yeah, pepper jack cheese or American. The money is in my purse downstairs.”

“Oh, no.” He slipped his T-shirt over his head. “I’m paying for it.”

I headed to the bathroom. “Fine, but I’m taking you out to dinner tonight then.” There was no room for argument in my voice. I was paying for dinner. End of story.

“Fair enough,” he called out. “I’ll see you soon.”
